Aeriosonde was developed by Insitu, Inc. of Washington, D.C., USA. It is manufactured by Aerosonde Australia Ltd. which is part of Boeing Integrated Defense Systems.
On June 22, 2006, the Aerosonde was acquired by AAI and is now known as the AAI Aerosonde.
The exterior of the Aerosonde UAS has the same configuration as many other modern UAVs. The main internal components (payload, engine, fuel, sensors, avionics) are housed in a central nacelle.
For this purpose, a straight wing is attached to the rear of the fuselage. A thin strip is attached to each trailing edge of the wing to stabilize the plane of the trailing edge.

The engines were mounted in a “push” configuration at the very rear of the fuselage nacelle and were controlled by a simple two-bladed propeller system.

A two-cylinder, four-stroke K-Twin EFI engine is known to be available as an option. This powerplant uses 93-octane aviation gasoline or premium gasoline. The Aerosonde is capable of 10 hours of flight under standard monitoring.
The Aerosonde is designed to be launched on an ejector rail system and retrieved on a twin mast-net structure. Therefore, the Aerosonde is designed without fixed or disposable landing gear.
Like a typical UAS, the Aerosonde UAS package consists of three Aerosonde UASs (each with a payload to monitor), a towed launch and recovery system, and a ground control station.
AAI Aerosonde Development and Testing
Until the late 1990s, the Aerosonde UAS was in the design, development, and testing phase, with several phases of evaluation completed. 1998 saw the first successful transatlantic crossing from Newfoundland, Canada to Scotland in less than 27 hours (26.45 hours) under fully autonomous control. As of 2013, Aerosond is still in operation.
As of 2013, the Aerosonde is active worldwide. The US military is evaluating the Aerosonde Mark Series 4.4 for its ability to improve the stability of combat-capable drones.
Production and Latest Models
In this role, the production model of the Mark 4.4 is referred to as the XMQ-19A. After receiving it, the official name will be “MQ-19A”.
The latest production model of the Aerosonde is the Mark 4.7 with automatic start and recovery and integrated data transmission facilities, designed to work with ground control stations and NATO 4586 remote video terminal system configurations.
