Eurocopter replaced the existing AS 532 Puma series (after the previous SA 330 Puma brand) with the AS 532 A2 Puma. formal design tests were conducted between 1996 and 1999, but some flaws in the design were found.

The model was first registered for flight in January 2001 and was later adopted by the French Air Force in 2005 as the Eurocopter EC725 Caracal, at a cost of 15 million Euros per aircraft.
