MilitaryEzyInfo.com – Despite the relatively low overall production of Airbus Military’s C-295 tactical military transport aircraft, it has become popular with the military due to its characteristic versatility.
In 1988, a Spanish-Indonesian joint venture unveiled a high-powered propeller-driven tactical transport aircraft, and the first 273 were produced under the CASA / IPTN brand.
Subsequent new initiatives included improvements to the twin-turbo fan system of the C-295 and a larger fuselage (six additional frames, three front and three rear), which increased the internal payload by 50%.
To cope with the increased weight, a new Pratt & Whitney PW127G series turboprop engine was installed, and the wings and landing gear were strengthened. Additional fuel tanks were added to increase the cruising range.
The C-295, which began development in November 1996, was unveiled at the Paris Air Show the following year and was introduced to the Spanish Air Force in 2001.
It is still in operation by the air forces of more than a dozen countries around the world. The prototype made its maiden flight on November 28, 1997, tested to be a good design, and has been in continuous production since 1997, with more than 100 aircraft delivered.
Since then, the CASA has been operated under the EADS brand, now renamed Airbus Military. The aircraft is manufactured at Airbus Military’s facility in Spain.
The C-295 is piloted by two pilots, with additional mission specialists depending on the cargo and mission role. The interior cabin can accommodate 71 combatants or a payload of 20,400 pounds.
The aircraft dimensions are 80.2 feet long, 84.7 feet wingspan, and 28.2 feet high. The maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) is 51,145 pounds. Power is provided by two Pratt & Whitney PW127G turboprop engines, each rated at 2,645 horsepower, driving a six-bladed propeller.
Performance includes a maximum speed of 360 mph, a cruise speed of 300 mph, a range of 3,300 miles, and a service altitude of 30,000 feet. High wing design with high climb performance and low flight stability.
The fuselage appears to be tubular, with a flight deck attached to the short nose to give a good view of the cockpit. The tail section is raised to allow access to the rear cargo channel under the tail.
The tail unit features a single vertical tail fin and horizontal surfaces at the bottom. The landing gear is fully deployed and the main bracket is mounted under the fuselage protrusion.
This variant uses the C-295M, which is essentially a military version. The Indonesian local production brands were the NC-295 and CN-295. A maritime patrol aircraft variant was the C-295 MPA “Persuader” with six support points for the anti-submarine role.
In addition to being supplied to the UK, it is also used by the Chilean Navy and another contract with a NATO member is underway.
There is also a version that uses the Israeli AESA radar for airborne early warning and control (AEW & C = “AWAC”) capability, which is still a prototype with a radome mounted on the rear of the fuselage, which was shown at the 2011 Royal International Air Tattoo.
The C-295W has impellers on both ends of the main fuselage and improved engine mounts. This mark is still in the final development stage.
