In the Army, these “mini” UAVs have become part of a growing UAV industry that includes man-portable unmanned systems that can be manually launched and easily recovered, suitable for use at the company level.
Since then, a number of manufacturers have seized the opportunity to supply such products to the lucrative market, and more are expected to acquire them in subsequent years.
The Turkish state, which used to rely heavily on foreign technology to strengthen its military position in the Middle East, is now able to find solutions from within, and in 2007 Baykar Makina handed over its homemade small UAS, Bayraktar, to the Turkish military.
The first flight of the UAS was recorded in October 2006. Production has exceeded 500 units.
The mini-UAS provides the Army with a localized, easy-to-use, rapid intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) response capability.
It is equipped with features such as automatic takeoff and landing, waypoint control, encrypted communications, and automatic tracking.
Operators can launch manually and control it from a ground control station if necessary, and recovery is by belly landing or by operable parachute in case of emergency.
It can communicate from a distance of 10 km and can operate at an altitude of 12,000 feet. Duration is up to 60 minutes.
It has a total length of 1.2 meters and a wingspan of 1.6 meters. It weighs 3.5 kg. Propulsion comes from an electric battery.
There are two main types of Pilarcter: Pilarcter A and Pilarcter B. Pilarcter A has a CCD sensor and an infrared camera.
The A has a CCD sensor and thermal imaging camera on a fixed amount, while the B has the same configuration on a trainable mount for greater tactical flexibility.
