It is based on the CN-235 developed by EADS (now Airbus Military) and has the high fuselage shape of a twin-engine monoplane and electric rear cargo rails for easy access to the cargo hold.
Since 2009, the aircraft has been equipped with 18 HC-144s and continues to operate in surface mode today (2020).
Prior to 2009, the U.S. Coast Guard was actively seeking a replacement for the Dassault HU-25 Guardian, a business jet that performs the same role in surface operations.
