MilitaryEzyInfo.com – The letter, published yesterday afternoon in the conservative magazine Valeurs Actuelles, follows the tone of a similar letter published in the same magazine last month, also warning of civil strife.
The previous letter, signed by a handful of military officers and semi-retired generals, caused an uproar in France, with the prime minister calling it “unacceptable interference” and France’s top generals vowing that anyone who supported the letter would be punished.
It is unclear how many people were behind this letter and what their rank was.
Unlike the previous letter, this one also accepts signatures from the general public.
The author claims to have seen a younger generation of military personnel, known as the “firepower generation,” on active duty.
“They have given their skin to destroy Islam, which has made concessions to our land.”
He added that the group had also participated in security operations in France, which were launched in response to a series of terrorist attacks in 2015.
It also noted that for some religious groups, “France is nothing but an object of cynicism, contempt and even hatred.
The letter comes amid a heated political climate ahead of France’s 2022 vote, with Macron’s main rival believed to be far-right leader Marine Le Pen.
In a letter last month, Prime Minister Jean Castries called the military’s rare intervention in politics “an act contrary to all the principles of our republic and to the honor and duty of the military.
General Francois Lecointre, chief of staff of the French armed forces, said the signatories would face sanctions ranging from outright forced resignation to disciplinary action.
