US Military Offers Covid-19 Vaccine to South Korean Army
MilitaryEzyInfo.com – The U.S. military has offered to provide several types of Johnson & Johnson’s (J&J) Covid-19 vaccine to the South Korean military, South Korea’s Defense Ministry said Monday (May 17, 2021).
This offer came at a time when South Korea is suffering from a shortage of Covid-19 vaccine supply.
The offer came just days before President Moon Jae-in’s visit to Washington for his first high-level meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, who called for an increase and acceleration of the supply of U.S.-made Covid-19 vaccine.
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, citing unnamed government sources, reported that the U.S. and South Korean armed forces (USFK) have offered to provide 13,000 doses of J&J’s vaccine.
The ROK Defense Ministry, however, declined to confirm the dosage of the vaccine offered by the ROK government but said it was in discussion with the ROK government and health authorities on how to use the vaccine.
Col. Lee Peters, a spokesman for the South Korean military, refused to confirm the offer. He did, however, tell Reuters that he was working with the South Korean government to use the U.S. government-approved Covid-19 vaccine.
South Korea’s disease control and prevention agency referred questions on the matter to the Health Ministry, which did not respond for comment.
The USCFC said it began administering single doses of J&J’s vaccine to members of the military and related organizations in March, after receiving approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in February.
Due to global supply shortages and delays in obtaining the vaccine, the launch of the Covid-19 vaccine in South Korea has become uncertain. This has led to widespread skepticism among the public about South Korea’s goal of achieving herd immunity by November.
In April, South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety gave final approval to a contract to import 6 million doses of J&J’s Covid-19 vaccine. However, the delivery date for J&J’s vaccine has not yet been set.
